CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Appalachian Writing Project Teacher Consultants Only
AWP book on Teaching Writing to Rural Students (MotesBooks, 2010)

Date: October 5, 2009
To: AWP Teacher Consultants
From: Editorial Board (Amy C., Robin C., Rebecca E., Rita J., Karen P.)
Deadline: January 3, 2010
Projected publication: December, 2010

The editorial board and a selected sub-committee is now accepting submissions for our first published volume with Louisville, KY based MotesBooks, whose authors include Silas House, George Ella Lyon, Anne Shelby, Marianne Worthington and Jim Minick. Authors whose pieces are accepted will receive a complimentary copy of the book in addition to the privilege of appearing in the AWP’s tenth anniversary publication. This book will be used as a text in many of the AWP’s professional development courses (Summer Institute, Open Institutes, Teaching Writing series) and will be offered for sale to public schools across the region and on Amazon.com.

This book will target elementary-college level teachers of rural students. Its aim is twofold: (a) to include first-person essays by teachers of writing about how they practice what they expect of their students (including inspiration, process, writer’s block, etc.) and (b) to provide research-based ideas on teaching writing in the content areas with suggested modifications.

Pieces should be no longer than 5 pages or 1500 words in length (including bibliographic references). Teaching ideas should be based on the author’s own action research in his/her classroom but should also be grounded in theory or other up-to-date secondary research. Original artwork and photography with relevant connections to the book’s theme will be considered and may also be considered for the cover. This process is a blind review, meaning authors’ names will not appear on their pieces as they are being considered.

Format (PLEASE FOLLOW CAREFULLY): Double-spaced word-processed pieces should be sent electronically to awpsubmissions@yahoo.com as attachments and saved in Microsoft Word default or RTF (Rich Text Format). Do not number pages. Use 12 point Times New Roman font. Please use the endnotes feature to identify your sources and MLA format for the bibliographic citation. (Endnotes will appear this way). Original artwork and photography should be scanned in high resolution format and sent as a PDF file. Pieces that do not conform to the format will be sent back to the author for re-formatting.

On a separate page, authors should include: name, address, email, telephone, title of the piece and a 50-word bio should the piece be selected for publication. The author’s name should NOT appear on the piece itself. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Should your piece be chosen for publication, please understand that it may be returned to you for further revision or editing before it is considered ready for the final manuscript.

We hope you are as excited as we are about this wonderful opportunity for AWP TCs to be published by a regional press. We would like to add that the owner of this publishing company, Kate Larken, is a former writing project director, and is eager to work with us.

We look forward to your submission!

A heartfelt Thank You to Robin and Rita for the amazing Advanced Institute! It has left me with a song in my heart and a pen in my hand. The presenters were incredible, the fellowship was much needed, and the gift card was an added surprise! I am already anticipating next year! Thank You again and again for all that you do for AWP!

I'm excited over the new book!! Maybe once we get it out, the localities will be a little more receptive to our various programs. It should give us a lot more credibility as a "go-to" source for writing.

I am SO looking forward to seeing AWP faces at the Breaks. My dad is doing much better, and we are now hopeful we will get to take him home soon. The Breaks sounds like a great way to celebrate!
