Becky, to add: each OI was designated a credit/no-credit "course" through the Center for Teaching Excellence to help teachers gain valuable recertification credits. The college paid the instructors' salaries, schools or participants pay a reduced-tuition fee, and the AWP helped with supplies and individual TC instructor-stipends.

Let me know if I can answer any more funding questions specifically. I plan to be there, as well.

I can speak specifically to leadership and costs. We chose leaders based on (1) record of inservice and feedback; (2) qualifications for being an adjunct faculty member--Master's degree; and (3) representative of area needing inservice outreach.

Funding: Buchanan was funded entirely by the Jump-Start grant for two years but will be self-sustained in the future through either a partnership with the school or tuition from the participants (since we no longer get that grant.)

Tazewell, Smyth, and Lee were funded via a partnership between the school, CTE, and AWP. (Buchanan could also possibly be in the partnership in the upcoming year). Funding sources include grants, Title money, and tuition paid by the teacher-participants.

Becky, can we use the site in Lee, as well? That would make four.

Hello All,
For the presentation, all 3 cites represented are supposed to have a display about our cite's work on Open Institutes. They are calling this the Gallery Wall. Things to include are explanation of why we started an OI, how did we choose our leadership, sample schedule(s), how much did it cost, how did we get the money, etc. When Lynette sends out the notes of our discussion, she may go into more detail.
The plan is to give the teachers attending approx. 25 minutes to visit the Gallery Walls and look at the display and ask questions. It would be great if you guys could help me with that and be available to answer questions about our OI's.
After the teachers circulate through the Gallery Wall, they will be given 20 min. to plan how they can take what they saw and use it for their own OI's.
I am also responsible for concluding the discussion. My thought was to talk about developing a survey to use as a planning tool for an OI. I have the surveys I've used and would your input. Did you use surveys in your OI's?

As part of my OI's class fulfillment, I'm asking the teachers to help me generate questions for a survey that can be used a s a planning tool for the OI.

That's where we are right now. I'd appreciate any and all help you can give me.

Thanks,
Becky

Keela, Tammy, Mom:
Becky would like some feedback from you on your Open Institute experience as she prepares for the NWP workshop discussing the work we did with our Jump-Start grant. You can put your response here on the Ning. Thanks!

OI leaders, take a look at the blog Renia's Lee County OI is using. Good idea for next time:

Yes, there were 19 in attendance. Our final day is October 3. They are submitting a creative reflection (and personal writing, if they so choose) online. Everyone seemed to have a really good time. I'm glad I was part of this event. Several mentioned a renewed interest in personal writing and publishing, too.

Excellent, Keela! So you have 19 coming? Jennifer needed confirmation on that. Thanks!
